Why Treat Your Listing Like Your Home Page?

October 10, 2008

Are you getting the most out of your online business listing? If you haven’t been keeping your listing up-to-date or taken advantage of every feature offered, then your answer is probably no. Below are some steps you can follow to make sure that your listing is up to par.

First, approach your online business directory listing as if it were your home page or a cover of a catalog if you do not have a business Web site. Your listing will play a role in establishing your reputation, so you will want to make a good first impression.

Although most online business listings are short and ‘flair-less’, there are ways to turn your online listing into a rather convincing promotional tool. How so? Fill in as many fields as you can. If there is space to put your phone number, address, email address and Web site address, fill it. Include your logo if allowed. The more information you can provide the better.

Many online business listings also allow you to submit a brief description of your business. Always create a description if a site enables you to do so. Make sure the description you submit is consistent with the message portrayed on your home page, your television commercial, your brochure and so on. And, keep in mind that your description is an opportunity for you to provide a reason why your business should be chosen over your competitor’s business. Most local search users do not have their minds made up, so the are impressionable.

Once you’ve created your listing, do not forget to check periodically to see if the online directory you are using has introduced any new features. The more you check, the faster you can react and the quicker you will be able to reap the benefits.
